Day 37 Friday 18th November 2011 The body

Friday 18th November 2011

Rembrant to Kirstens

Things to consider for portrait work:
Methods to achieve my representation of my sitter
Camera Position (subtleties); Scale; Gaze; Context (Background); Light and Dark

We watched a short film on Brian Griffin (who originally shot for Management Today), also a shorter clip of
Martin Parr (who I've also seen working on the TV series 'The Genius of Photography')

Steve McCurry (the Magnum photographer famous for his image 'The Afgan Girl' was also discussed)

 The days timetable
10:00-11:00 Contextual talk plus short artist documentaries
11:15 Studio One, Lighting Demo
Task
15:30 Meet Studio Two with B&W contact sheets

Far from perfect set of images, but we did have to run three rolls of film (one each, we worked in teams of three) through one camera and all switch around. A couple of the standing poses are slightly over exposed in the facial area (where Johns face is obviously closer to the light), this could be addressed during printing. Also an unsightly shadow is visible on the background, caused by the top poly board we used.
Lighting was a T2 'Arri' continuous light (diffused with a sheet of 'full spun'), used with a Mamiya RZ67 using Ilford FP4 ISO 125 film with no reflector of any type. Since John was wearing black I decided against going for a fully black background as we were using just the one light (with two I could have separated John from the blackness of the background)

My contact sheet was appaling as I exposed the sheet for 7 seconds (the time left on the timer by a previous user), 3-4 seconds would have been enough time!

Re-printed contact sheet 05 Dec 2011
