Day 68 Monday 5th March 2012 The Time Machine

Monday 5th March 2012 The Time Machine

10:00 with MJP LT1
Using a fashion photographer as an example MJP talked through the methodology of creating the body of work for this project. His individual approach is a systematic approach starting (in this case) with images, investigating and linking this work to other sources. Starting my analysing the image and understanding what characterises the work. This leads onto detailed analysis of items such as architecture that enables the viewer to fix the setting for example. Clothing is another clue that can lead to further historical contextualisation. Research of the photographers personal education and their history, along with their personal influences comes next. Investigating these influences, and the source of their inspiration takes one deeper. Using books, articles and magazines both online and printed and investigating those and any moving image  media such as films or interviews before finally looking at (for this specific example) psychology. Google can be a good place to gather varied sources of information such as images, essays, academic reviews and media or critics responses to work

The approach is a layered one using varied sources, building chapters on each layer of information before returning to a final conclusion.

Caroline (CS) followed on from Michael with her individual approach to the matter at hand.
CS used a less linear approach to fully understand all areas relating to a given photographer (initially Stephen Meisels 'State of Emergency' in her example). Google was again mentioned as a good starting point especially for very contemporary work that may not have much written about it in print yet. CS's approach was a broad based research approach which involved distilling down the output into an essay, choosing from potentially numerous options.

'The War is Always Home' and 'Make Love not War' were both discussed (both Martha Rosner)

Following on from the lecture we had a seminar with MJP where we were set a small research task. Spending 30 minutes looking into a photographic piece of work (from a small selection).

Also it is to be noted that the timetable has been changed thus:

Monday 19th March & Monday 26th
March Essay support Group tutorials
Discussion of essay topics and development of outline structures.
You should all have selected the subject of your analysis and have conducted exploratory research in order to understand what your approach will be to its analysis (what main question will you be debating or what ideas will you be using to analyse it or what hypothesis about it will you be seeking to debate)You should aim to bring an outline in bullet point or diagram form that breaks down your analysis into its main sections preferably with a key reference for each. Get as far as you can and the aim will be to build on this in the tutorials.
